About Us
UCLU Music Society is one of the oldest and largest at UCL. It is open to anyone within the University with an interest in music and it aims to provide as many people as possible with the opportunity to get involved in music, whether that be through performing, learning, volunteering, or simply just listening!
The society currently runs four ensembles, the Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Choir, which are auditioned, and the Symphony Chorus and Concert Band which are open to anyone who wants to get involved. There are plans to establish a String Orchestra for the beginning of the 2009/10 academic year, and this will also be unauditioned.
The society puts on several concerts during the first term. The Symphony Chorus and Orchestra join forces for two concerts, each with their own programme pieces, while the Chamber Choir and Concert Band both have their own performances. There are also opportunities during the year to collaberate with other UCLU societies to work on shows such as ballets and musicals. We also organise a number of social events throughout the term - everything from concert-going to parties!
While Chamber Choir and Concert Band continue through second term, from January the Symphony Orchestra and Chorus combine to form the society's other incarnation, UCOpera. University College Opera is probably the most ambitious semi-professional opera company in the country. Its performances of premieres and lost works provide students with the unique opportunity of performing exciting, challenging pieces with professional soloists and directors. UCOpera's productions in the Bloomsbury Theatre receive considerable national press coverage, and have become something of a highlight in the major newspapers, specialist publications and even international music press.The Chorus, Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Choir all work under the direction of our Director of Music, Charles Peebles.
