Get Involved
Performance
The society currently runs 5 different ensembles for its members, yet we are always open to more suggestions for new groups and happy to facilitate their development. Please do get in touch with us if you are interested in setting up a new activity – as a long-running and well-established society within UCL Union, we have access to the resources you will need and we can help in finding rehearsal and performance space, as well as hiring music.
Through our mailing lists, members of the society also have the opportunity to be involved in other public performances and can be hired for private functions. Being part of UCLU Union also allows for collaboration events with other student groups, from UCLU Ballet, to UCLU Musical Society, to Voce, a gospel singing ensemble. If you are interested in involving our members in any outside event, please contact the President: info@uclumusicsociety.co.uk.
For information about joining our society, check the UCL Union website. From this year you will be able to join any society online as well as by going to the CSC Reception, 2nd floor Bloomsbury Theatre Building. Freshers can join during Joining Fortnight (19th – 30th October 2009). If you’re interested in a particular ensemble please contact the group managers – you’ll find their email addresses on their individual pages.
We also have close links with UCL Chamber Music Club. The Club put on regular chamber music concerts and are always on the look out for willing performers. For more information about the Club and how to join them, take a look at their website: www.ucl.ac.uk/chamber-music.
Other ways to get involved
There are many other ways you can get involved in music at UCL:
- Concerts
If it’s listening to music you’re interested in, not only do we organise a range of performances throughout the year, but we also regularly inform our members of student deals available for concerts by professional ensembles and organise group trips to see them. - Conducting
We currently run two un-auditioned ensembles for players of any standard who want some experience of playing in a group. The Concert Band and the String Orchestra were also created to give students from UCL and London’s music colleges the opportunity to conduct an ensemble, not just play in one. If you are interested in taking a rehearsal with one of these groups please email info@uclumusicsociety.co.uk - Volunteering
The Volunteering Services Unit (VSU) is another part of UCL Union which co-ordinates many volunteering projects across London, including music projects with local schools. Please go to their website for more information: www.uclunion.org/volunteers - UCOpera
UCOpera is the society’s most serious undertaking. There are lots of important jobs that need doing in the run up to the Opera in March each year. A search for funding begins in the previous April alongside a major marketing campaign, kicking off a year of preparation for the final performance. If you would like to be involved please email operamanager@ucopera.co.uk or visit the website for more information: www.ucopera.co.uk
